7 tips for sustaining your goals in 2023!

Achieving personal goals can be difficult, but with these seven tips, you'll be able to stay focused and on track all year long!

The first step to saving money is to create a budget

Before you start cutting down all expenses, you might want to try and create a budget to get a better understanding of your financial situation. If you don’t know where to begin, here are some tips to set you on your way.

  • The 50/20/30 budget approach is a dynamic budgeting technique that can help you manage your finances. It divides your spending into three categories: 50% for essential costs, 20% for savings, and 30% for the things you enjoy.
  • Start paying down your debt. When you’re trying to save money, you need to consider everything you owe. Look for different approaches and pay down your debts – especially those with high interest rates like credit cards.
  • Try a budgeting app. There are plenty of free and intuitive budgeting apps that can help you on your savings journey. They can help you track your spending and make smarter decisions about your money.

Then, make some habitual changes

A simple change in your mindset can help you save a lot of money and achieve your financial goals faster. Without any drastic changes, there are plenty of ways you can cut down on your spending.

  • Use the 30-day method. Whenever you think about purchasing a new item, put that money into your savings account and wait 30 days. If after that time you still want it, go ahead and buy it. If not, you can leave the money in your savings.
  • Look for discounts when you shop. Before making any new purchase, look for coupons or special discounts to avoid paying full price for it. There are plenty of websites that can help you find promotions on all of your favorite stores.
  • Switch to generic brands. You don’t have to switch all products you use, but make a list of the ones you don’t mind trading. Generic brands usually cost a lot less than name-brands.

Save money on dining and drinks

If you spend too much money on groceries, dining, or delivery services, it might be wise to learn how you can cut some of that back. You don’t have to stop going out altogether, but reducing your expenses will help you save more money.

  • Make a shopping list and stick to it. It can be pretty easy to add unnecessary items to your shopping cart when you’re getting groceries – especially if you’re hungry-shopping. But make a list ahead of going to the store and stick to it.
  • Pack a lunch. It’s much easier to go out for lunch every day when you work at an office, but even a couple of times a week can add up pretty quickly. Instead of going out, try to prepare a tasty meal and pack it the night before work.
  • Invite your friends in instead of going out. You don’t have to do this every weekend, but every now and then, invite your friends for a cozy night in instead of going to an expensive bar or restaurant.

You can also save money on bills

If you plan it out, you can save quite a lot of money on utilities and other recurring payments. It’s actually easier than you’d think because you can map out everything that you’re paying for. Then you can decide which costs to cut.

  • Consider switching from cable TV to video streaming services. There are plenty of affordable options, and depending on which credit cards you have, you can even earn cash back on selected subscriptions.
  • Evaluate your subscriptions. If you already subscribe to streaming platforms, check how many you have and how many you actually use. Since they’re so affordable, sometimes we forget how much their costs can add up.
  • Save money by lowering your energy costs. Look for ways you can save on utility bills by making small changes within your home. Purchasing energy-efficient light bulbs for instance is a good place to start.

Save money on entertainment

Just because you’re trying to reach a savings goal, doesn’t mean you need to hold back on having fun. There are still a lot of different ways you can entertain yourself without spending a fortune.

  • Look for free events. You can check out the website for your local community and see what they have lined-up. You’ll surely find a plethora of fun events you can attend without spending a dime.
  • Check out your local libraries. Other than checking out thousands of interesting books, many libraries also offer other sources of entertainment like board games and DVDs you can rent for a short period of time.
  • Stay alert for promotions and discounts. Join the mailing list of your favorite bar, venue or amusement park to get notified about special deals and discounts they may offer from time to time.

Other ways you can save money

There are also other ways you can contribute to your savings goal or that might actually help you improve your current situation.

  • Think about your retirement. Make sure to include a retirement plan on your savings goal. If your company offers a 401(k), you can take advantage of that. If not, start putting some money aside for a comfortable life in the future.
  • Pay attention to your tax refund. It’s almost tax season, and if you’re anticipating your tax refund this year, direct some of it to your savings account.
  • Take advantage of cash back credit cards to earn rewards on your spending. If you can qualify, look for a card that adapts to your spending habits.
