What is the difference between Global Entry and TSA PreCheck?

Those are both trusted traveler programs to help streamline the airport security process.

TSA PreCheck is designed to provide expedited security checks for domestic flights, allowing TSA-approved travelers access to a priority line at TSA checkpoints and avoid having to remove their shoes, belts, laptops, and liquids from their bags.

Global Entry is an additional program offering even more fast-track entry for those who qualify.

Unlike TSA PreCheck, Global Entry enables travelers to bypass immigration lines by using kiosks and gain quick access back into the United States after international travel.

While TSA PreCheck requires its users to pay an $85 membership fee every five years and prove US citizenship or a select few other statuses, Global Entry requires a membership fee of $100 every five years and a full background check before approval.

Both can be beneficial depending on a traveler’s needs. International flights outside of the US or domestic flights within it.

Pros and cons of both programs

Both are great options for travelers seeking expedited airport screening experiences.

TSA PreCheck is less of a hassle to obtain than Global Entry in terms of application requirements; one need only fill out TSA’s online application and pay an enrollment fee, but those applying for Global Entry must submit a passport, take part in an interview and visit an enrollment center.

However, Global Entry offers many additional benefits, such as expedited entry back into the U.S., that the TSA PreCheck does not, making it well worth the extra effort required to undertake its application process.

What’s more, citizens and residents of multiple countries are eligible to apply for Global Entry. A perk TSA PreCheck does not share—and at a very small fee increase over TSA PreCheck’s cost.

Does Global Entry include TSA PreCheck?

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that includes TSA PreCheck benefits, so you don’t need to sign up separately for one if you have the other.

This allows people with Global Entry privileges to use TSA PreCheck lanes at airports in the U.S. Which can significantly reduce time spent in security lines.

Furthermore, many credit cards cover the application fees. So the cost factor shouldn’t be a concern when weighing the two options side-by-side.

Given this, Global Entry almost always makes more sense since it includes TSA PreCheck at no extra charge.

How TSA PreCheck works

TSA PreCheck is a great way to make your TSA experience easier and more convenient. By joining TSA PreCheck, you’ll receive a “Known Traveler Number” or KTN that you can add to your frequent flyer account, which will automatically be added to any future reservations.

After meeting the eligibility criteria, your TSA PreCheck status can be indicated in your paper or electronic boarding pass.

TSA also offers another program called Global Entry, which provides TSA PreCheck benefits and expedited clearance for international visitors upon arrival into the United States. Taking advantage of TSA PreCheck services is an easy way to maximize airport convenience.

What to consider for both programs

While both offer similar benefits, a few key differences exist before deciding. Prominent among these is the traveler’s privacy.

TSA PreCheck only provides expedited TSA airport security screenings, while Global Entry gives access to TSA PreCheck plus U.S.

Customs clearance upon return from international flights. This can be especially important for parents traveling with children or groups of friends participating. In group tours, as it facilitates quicker routing through TSA security lines and Customs respectively.

Another notable difference between these programs is the nonrefundable fees associated with each program

Now that you know the ins and outs of each program, you can decide which one is best suited for your travel needs.

If you fly frequently, both programs could offer great benefits. But if you want access to the Global Entry network of trusted travelers, it might be worth shelling out a few extra dollars for the application fee.

No matter what program you choose, taking advantage of these programs can help make your next trip a breeze.
