Elon Musk has been a key factor in growing another social network
Mastodon, which is an open-source social network, has been gaining quite a lot of new users ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter. But why is that? Read the content below to learn more on the matter.

Many have been flocking to Mastodon since the Tesla CEO took over Twitter.
Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, a social media platform has been gaining recognition. Just not his own. The social network Mastodon was completely unheard of not two months ago. Now, it’s growing in numbers thanks to Musk’s mismanagement of his own platform.
Mastodon is an alternative social network that works as a microblogging platform. The social media app has seen its user base grow exponentially since the Tesla CEO purchased Twitter in October this year.
According to hourly data from Mastodon, sign-ups usually soar whenever there’s a new negative headline regarding Musk’s Twitter.
For instance, the social network had an average 130 new accounts per hour from early October until the 26th. Once Musk took control of Twitter on October 28, that number jumped to 2,000 new accounts per hour.
After Musk announced massive layoffs on the platform, more than 5,000 new Mastodon accounts were created per hour. Then, once the news broke that Twitter employees resigned en masse, those numbers peaked again at 10,000 new sign-ups per hour.
The social network saw a similar spike in December. It happened shortly after Twitter suspended a number of journalists who had been reporting on Elon and the platform. Then, it increased once more when Twitter banned users from sharing links to other social media.
Ever since Elon Musk became CEO of Twitter, many journalists and news organizations have joined other social network websites, like Mastodon. Nevertheless, Mastodon – which works as an open-source platform – still holds little significance.
According to online trackers, the social network Mastodon currently has a little less than 9 million users. Twitter, on the other hand, has over 237 active users as of the second quarter of 2022. For comparison, Facebook now has over 2.9 billion active users.
What even is the Mastodon social network?
Mastodon is a social network that has taken the internet by storm as an alternative to traditional social media platforms – like Twitter.
It’s a platform for communication built on open-source and decentralized technology. Meaning it’s owned and maintained not just by one organization, but by its users.
With Mastodon, individual users have more control; they can customize their accounts to suit their privacy needs, modify the look and feel of their profile page, and even join social networks based around topics of interest.
The social network offers limitless possibilities for connecting people from all over the world with diverse interests. Whether they’re looking for social wholesomeness or somewhere to discuss your gaming experiences.
