10. World Championships – No.1 Trainer – 1999
Only six copies of the card exist, and just two of those are in mint condition. And in July of 2020, one of those mint condition cards sold at auction for $90,000.
The No.1 Trainer card was first released in Japan in 1999 as a prize for winning a Pokemon tournament. While the $90,000 price tag may seem steep, it is far less than some experts believe the card is worth.
9. World Championships – No.2 Trainer – 2006
No. 2 Trainer cards have always been highly desirable amongst collectors for their scarcity and desirability.
The 2006 Pokemon World Championships variant is no exception, with a PSA 9 graded copy selling for a little over $110,000 in February of 2021.
8. First Edition Neo Genesis Lugia – 2000
It’s no surprise that the most powerful and rare Pokémon card in existence would be worth a pretty penny.
A first-edition Neo Genesis Lugia graded at PSAs 10 sold for over $144,000 dollars back in May 2021!
7. Family Event Kangaskhan – 1998
In October 2020, a PSA GEM-MT 10 copy of the card sold for $150,100 through PWCC Auctions on eBay.
The card was originally released in 1998 as a promotional item for the Family Game Show in Japan, and only ten copies exist.
The card features unique artwork of Kangaskhan with her baby and is one of the collectors’ most highly sought-after cards.
6. 2nd Tournament Trophy Pikachi No. 3 – 1998
This is one of the rarest and most valuable cards in existence. It was an award to participants at the 1998 2nd Tournament.
Making it an exceptional finding for any Pokémon fan! Seven copies exist on record so far. In July of 2022, one of these rare cards sold at auction for an incredible 192,000.
5. Ishihara GX Promo – 2017
In 2017, the Pokémon Company released a special trading card to commemorate 60 years since founder Tsunekazu Ishihara’s birth.
The Black Star signed GX promo card features an illustration by artist Ken Sugimori with a portrait of Ishihara with an autograph of the executive himself.
It was distributed to Pokémon Company employees as a celebratory gift and is quite rare. In April 2021, the card was sold at auction for $247,230
4. Charizard – 1996
A copy of the card in great condition and signed by Mitsuhiro Arita was sold for $324,000 in April of 2022.
This price is more than five times the previous record for the most expensive pokemon card. A Mint 9 copy of the card sold at auction for more than $60,000 in November 2020.
3. Blastoise Galaxy Star Hologram Pokémon card – 1998
In January 2021, at an auction, a rare Pokémon card sold for $360,000. The card, which features the character Blastoise, is one of only two copies in existence.
The card was a commission by Ken Sugimori. Which is the artist responsible for the creation of the Pokémon characters. And was a presentation for Nintendo’s then-president Hiroshi Yamauchi.
2. Holographic Charizard – 1999
One of the most valuable Pokémon cards ever sold at auction was a First Edition Shadowless Holographic Charizard from 1999. The collector who got this gem for $420,000 is probably happy as a kid!
According to professional graders, the condition of the card is a “near mint” grade. Therefore, making it even more desirable to collectors.
1. Pikachu Illustrator Pokémon card – 1998
The most expensive pokemon card in the world is worth a record $5.275 million dollars back on July 2021- the original release date was 1998! It was originally released as part of a promotional event in Japan.
Only 39 copies are available. This makes it one of those rarest and most valuable cards out there
The card was bought by YouTuber Logan Paul, who is known for his love of the Pokemon franchise. The Pikachu Illustrator is one of only a handful of cards with a PSA 10 grade, the highest grade possible.
The Pikachu Illustrator will remain the most expensive pokemon card in the world for years to come.
