Last Tuesday, the White House released an outline of its plan to end hunger in the U.S. by 2030. The document also contains new plans to increase the population’s access to healthier food groups. The idea is to reduce diets that can cause diseases like hypertension and diabetes.

The announcement comes just a day ahead of the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, held earlier this Wednesday. According to officials, this is the first conference that focuses on nutrition and food security in over half a century.

The last White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health happened in 1969, and it was directly responsible for the creation of many action programs. These, in turn, have helped children and adults to have easier access to food. Like school lunches and the WIC ( Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children).

The summary laid out a few measures that the Biden administration should take in order to end hunger make healthier food more accessible. That includes an expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to more Americans. The administration also plans to expand school lunches and summer programs so children can have easier access to food.

According to White House documents, food insecurity and weight gain increase significantly, particularly among Black and Latino children, during the summer. Currently, there’s a Federal law that keeps many citizens with low monthly incomes from getting access to SNAP benefits. Including people who spent time incarcerated.

These restrictions may impact people who have aged out of foster care. Plus, college students and many more, and the current administration said it’ll work with Congress in order to remove them.

End hunger and provide more information for a healthier diet

The White House also has plans to improve on food packages across the country to provide more knowledge to people about what they’re consuming. There’s a specific proposal about a label printed in front of the package to help consumers easily identify foods that are more nutritious.

In its Tuesday announcement, the administration acknowledged that there’s no overnight fix or quick and easy way to address these issues. Right now, there’s no telling how many changes will occur to the current food programs across America or in regard to their labeling system. That is because there’s still action that’s required from Congress to put these changes in place.

In addition to that, research about food quality is always changing and evolving. Therefore, one can never be sure if these new government labels for what is supposed to be “healthy” will accurately reflect the new food science discoveries in real time.

It might seem difficult to label a diet as most or least healthy. However, it is common knowledge that a diet that includes vegetables, lean proteins and fruits promote a healthier lifestyle.

Not only that, but it might reduce the risk for a series of preventable illnesses. Alternatively, diets that are too high in sugar and salt can have a bad influence regarding health outcomes.
