The 2022 FIFA World Cup starts this weekend. The biggest sporting event in the world pits 32 of the best national soccer teams in the world against each other in order to find out who’s the crown champion for the next four years. This year’s event takes place in Qatar – a controversial choice to host the World Cup, to say the very least. 

This is the first time in history that the FIFA World Cup takes place in November. The competition – which is held every four years – usually happens between June and July. FIFA decided to change the schedule due to Qatar’s brutal midsummer heat, which would significantly affect the matches. 

According to officials, the 2022 FIFA World Cup was also cut short by four days. The idea behind the move is to decrease the midseason disruption. That is because many soccer leagues around the world generally pause their tournaments to allow their players to play in the World Cup. 

Team USA is returning to the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 2014, when the tournament took place in Brazil. In 2018, the national team failed to qualify for the competition in Russia. In 2022, the young group will have Christian Pusilic as their captain.

Pusilic, a 24-year old who currently plays for Chelsea, had scored once in 12 games this season during the Premier League. Despite facing difficulties in the U.K., Pusilic is responsible for a notable hat trick in a qualifying match back in March against Panama.

Starting next week, Pusilic and the rest of Team USA will have to put out their best show in order to escape tough matchups in Group B against England and Wales. The Team will debut on Monday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. in a match against Wales. 

You can catch the games with English narration on Fox, as the channel holds the rights to the World Cup games transmissions in the U.S. NBC’s Telemundo will offer the games in Spanish. 

The matches in English will air on FS1 and Fox. While Telemundo and the streaming platform Peacock will air the games in Spanish. 

If you’re attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup in person, there are a few rules you should know about. Qatar welcomes all visitors, but the usual behavior amongst soccer fans is not okay in the country. Like, for instance, the public consumption of alcoholic beverages.
